Technical Barriers for MLCC-Grade PVB
Common PVB products used for laminated glass only require impurity control at ppm levels. In contrast, MLCC electronic-grade PVB demands trace metal ions to be controlled at ppb levels. Even tiny amounts of sodium, potassium, iron or calcium residues can trigger leakage, dielectric breakdown and component failure during capacitor operation, especially for automotive and server-grade MLCCs.

- High-purity raw material barrier: Production must start with ultra-high purity electronic PVA feedstock. Standard industrial PVA cannot be purified sufficiently to satisfy electronic specifications.
- Precise reaction & purification process: Semi-continuous synthesis, multi-stage washing and fine filtration are required. The butyralization degree and molecular weight distribution must be tightly controlled. Broad molecular weight distribution causes slurry agglomeration, pinholes and delamination in cast ceramic films.
- Customized grade matrix: Multiple viscosity grades are needed to match ultra-small form factor, high-voltage automotive and high-frequency industrial MLCC types, with years of formulation tuning required.
- Long customer qualification cycle: The full validation process from lab trial, pilot run, reliability testing to PPAP approval typically takes 12–24 months. Once qualified, material suppliers maintain stable, long-term supply relationships, creating high switching costs for MLCC manufacturers.

Key product specifications: butyralization degree between 73%–78%, hydroxyl content at 19%±1%, ash content ≤0.05%, volatile matter ≤2.0%, acid value ≤0.5 mgKOH/g.
